There’s something special about natural materials in home decor, and pine cones are one of the best materials to work with during the holidays. They bring rustic charm and texture, and this wreath is an easy way to add a warm, natural touch to any space.

Here’s a DIY tutorial to make your own simple pine cone wreath. It takes just a few supplies and a little time!

Materials

DIY wreath supplies including ribbon, glue, pinecones
  • 12″ Grapevine wreath
  • 30-36 small pine cones (1 to 2.5 inches in length)
  • Mini pine cones (varies)
  • Hot glue kettle or Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  • Twine or ribbon (optional-for hanging)
  • Spray paint (optional)

Selecting Pinecones

You can use store-bought or foraged pinecones for this project. Although I love gathering pinecones and even bleaching them for crafts, I only have large pinecones on my property. This wreath looks best with small (1 to 2.5 inches in length) and mini cones. I ended up buying crafting cones at a big-box retail store, but you can find similar medium cones and mini cones on Amazon. But for reference, I used about 32 small/medium cones and an entire bag of 150 mini pine cones.

If your pinecones are freshly collected, you’ll need to properly prepare them for crafting.

Steps to Make the Wreath

Glue pine cone base

Dip the base of cones into hot glue and allow the extra glue to drain off (if using a glue kettle). If using a glue gun, add a generous amount of hot glue to the base.

Arrange pine cones

Start from one side, placing the larger pine cones first.

Try to vary the direction and angle of each cone to give the wreath a natural, full look—avoid perfect symmetry.

Fill in the Gaps

As you build around the wreath form, keep checking for bare spots. Smaller pine cones or even bits of greenery (if you like) can help fill holes without making the design look forced.

Add the Hanger

Once your wreath is assembled and the glue has dried, attach a loop of twine, ribbon, or whatever you prefer for hanging. Secure it well so the wreath is balanced.

Final Touches

Give your wreath a gentle shake to see if any pine cones shift or need extra glue. Trim any glue strings or stray bits. Hang it where you’ll see it: a front door, a wall, or even over a mantel.

Tips & Ideas for Variation

  • Use pine cones of different shapes and sizes for more texture.
  • Try adding small sprigs of evergreen, berries, or even cinnamon sticks for a festive twist.
  • If you like a lighter look, go for soft white paint accents; for something more dramatic, a dark stain or metallic spray can make it pop.
